Anwar Gargash, the UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, visited a new luxury lifestyle development on Egypt's Mediterranean coast yesterday. Dr Gargash said the scheme "added to the beauty of the Egyptian coastline" and was a "successful model of Arab investment and co-operation."

Marassi, by the Dubai-based Emaar property group, is an upscale resort-style destination on the country's relatively undeveloped north coast. Built in 15 clusters, it includes a marina and Mediterranean-style waterfront apartments, villas, Address residences, restaurants, shops, hotel accommodation, spas, sports facilities, a mosque and an 18-hole golf course.

Situated on Egypt's 1,000km long northern coast and 100km west of Alexandria, known as the "White Med" because of the colour of the sand, the complex is close to El Alamein, an important site in the Second World War.

Once only a destination for holidaymakers from Cairo, development has brought significant foreign investment and increasing numbers of visitors from Europe and the Gulf.
