A fire broke out on Wednesday at a construction site on Saadiyat Island, close to NYU Abu Dhabi.

The fire took hold in a building under construction to the east of the university campus. Smoke could be seen billowing across the North site stadium.

Civil Defence crews attended the blaze.

One social media user reported seeing the fire across from the NYUAD campus.

A spokeswoman for NYUAD confirmed the fire was on a construction site next to the university, not the campus itself.

The university sent students an email shortly before 8am assuring them there was no risk to classes and that evacuation was not necessary. Students tweeted pictures of the fire and a copy of the email.
